Create an Organizational Culture of Change Leaders

The CEO of Whirlpool, Jeff Fettig, is one example of a change leader who has established a culture of change leaders. Another great example is a Latino change leader, Ralph de la Vega who was recently profiled in Delta's Sky Mile magazine on his leadership approach and his big job to be a change leader in the merger of AT&T Mobile and Business Solutions.

He describes a childhood that was filled with change (in my experience many excellent change leaders have overcome many personal childhood and life challenges), coming to the United States as a child and being raised by foster parents while he waited for his parents to be able to live in the United States. Fast forward to 2015 and de la Vega is leading AT&T's efforts to change, transform, and diversify. The big focus under his leadership is to lead AT&T with a futuristic approach. In his division and under his leadership AT&T is thinking big and leading change by focusing consumers and businesses to be aware that they have more wireless needs than ever before. Some of the tools that AT&T uses to create the culture of change is something I mentioned in an earlier chapter, namely The Foundry, which is an innovation hub with an additional hub for change initiatives and innovations taking place at AT&T's Drive Studio in Atlanta. Nationally, AT&T is investing major dollars through the AT&T University to provide the entire work force to go through ongoing and repetitive training and exposure to “being leaders of change.” When I worked with AT&T in 2014, I worked with 6,000 of the middle managers as part of an AT&T University Leadership program and my sessions were titled, “Lead with 2020 Vision.” The conferences consisted of programming to help the leaders be leaders of change. The Dean of the University, Ken, described the changes that needed to happen with all levels within the company as turning a great big ship in the middle of a couple of icebergs. AT&T is doing all the right things to create a culture of change leaders. The right things include the following five:
